Yesterday was a very special day for me and all of us. 15th August holds a very special place in my heart and I completely understand and treasure the meaning of independence.

I love everything about India. By nature I am a very emotional and passionate person. My bonding with my mother land is very special and deep. India is a unique country in more than many ways. And one thing which really strikes me is that despite coming from different backgrounds, we are one. No country in the world can match this uniqueness about India. Our dressing room is the best example of that. Here one can find a superb amalgamation of all sects and religions. Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan’s identity here is through the kind of game they play and not by the kind of religious beliefs they follow. As long as we understand and follow this simple mantra of unity in diversity no one in the world is a match for us. No doubt we have our issues, but, find me a house where there are no issues. But they are our issues and we can handle them. Recently, I was watching the Kargil Divas celebration on the screen, and I got really emotional. Thanks to our brave soldiers and what they did for us ten years back. They came from all parts of India and sacrificed their life to ensure that we can sleep peacefully at home. It’s basically the various colours of India that touches my heart the most. And when these colours gel together, we come across the most beautiful collage made by GOD.

In school days, this day meant we will get sweets in school and then we can go and play cricket the whole day. But once I started playing for India, I understood the importance of freedom and the price we have paid for it. Shaheede-Azam Bhagat Singh is my all time hero and his sacrifice for the mother Land has always inspired me. One thing I would like to share here is that, whenever the national anthem is played before the game, it really gives me lot of motivation and the zest and the zeal for the country increases manifolds. Most of the time on independence Day we are with the Indian team, playing in some other country and that makes the sense of the occasion all the more obvious. So no matter where we are, be it Trinidad or Melbourne, we always have a special celebration. In a very silent way, we pay tribute to all the brave men who laid down their life to so that we can stand under the Tiranga and feel proud to be an Indian.

Going by the way the things are moving in India, I can bet on one thing that, by 2020 India will be a force to reckon with. Entire world is looking unto us. When the entire world is reeling under the slowdown, our companies and banks are showing good profits. That’s because we can integrate the best of new and old and the foundation of our principles is rock solid. Going by my instinct, by 2020 India will be one of the super powers in the world, and by then there will be no poverty in India, no one will sleep hungry and everyone will have a job and security. In my field, I would like to see Indian cricket team at the top of all the forms of the game, and we are very close to it, and if keep performing well, we could be there in next two years. I would also like to see Indian sports doing extremely well in Olympics and we will have champions in all walks of life.

All this can’t be achieved without the power of the youth. Indian youth is very different from the youth of west. Our youth is more responsible, more talented and more determined to the cause. Entire world knows about it and that’s why they want us. Even president Obama is advocating the path of our youth to be followed. The youth needs empowerment; you give them that and then see things happening very quickly. Such a force with proper guidance and nurturing is someone to be reckoned. The Indian cricket team is the prime example of that. The youth is the future of the country and if we really want a prosperous and a happy nation, we need to trust our youth and let them do the things their way. We need to stay in- sync with our roots and we would never waver from the goal. Here’s wishing you a very happy independence day.

Jai Hind.

    Hon’ble Sir,

    Jai Hind
This world is full of purities & impurities and we in the race of materialistic needs never get time to think about our motherland and environment. We are so busy that we never think about anything apart from our family and materialistic requirements. Do we know the truth of the flowers, which we dedicate to our Lord ” The Creator of this world”? Sir, if you find any truth in the above illustration, let us feel the strength of your conviction by your participation in this Spiritual Mission.
Today on the occasion of the Independence day, we on behalf of every Indian remembering those thousands of freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the freedom of our country…a neat and clean country which they dreamt of. Lets join hands for this Noble and Spiritual Mission.
Our organization, YFF, has undertaken a project to clean the rivers of INDIA starting with The YAMUNA, which will be starting from Delhi .
    With kind regards,

  6. Gururaj Rao says:

    hi harbhajan,

Independence day means a lot to some of us and the quote from jawarharlal nehru is very true …

“Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance …. We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again.”

    Hello Sir,
I was a journalism student just 2 months back. Now I finished my course and am waiting for the call from the company in which am placed.

I totally agree with your view that future of our country lies in the hands of youngsters like us. But having been a media student and one who got some chances to interact with experienced media persons, I am very skeptical about the chance of India being a super power by 2020. Because media, which has to be a tool for progress is behaving very irresponsibly. Media acts as the catalyst sometimes in dividing people on the basis of caste, religion, region and language. Nowadays media has become business minded and not enough attention is given to issues like drought, poverty, health and hygiene etc.

I too agree with you on your views on pluralism and diversity.I am really happy to know that you, being someone who is in the media glare all the time, do think of issues which concern us and at the same time of issues which make us proud. A salute for that :-)

  26. Praveen Jha says:

    Hi,

This is my first visit to your blog. didn’t know you do blogging as well as you do bowling :P
I respect your emotions and feeling, but what you’ve written is pure wishful thinking about India. I’d suggest to be realistic about India and not write about something that we’ll never achieve. I’ll take all of what you’ve written one by one.
Every country is unique. India is (more) unique because of its extremes. No country can match this uniqueness is false. India has the diversity because of cast, color, language, dresses etc. Some other countries are equally diverse due to the various ethnicity that they have. See for example US or UK. My neighbors in US are from Spain, Italy, Japan, China and Nigeria. We can’t have that in India else some political class will start playing foul.

Regarding existence of issues, yes! Other countries also have the issues and what makes them different is they resolve the issues. we DON’T. Think about religious issues or cultural issues or for that matter the issue of corruption and dishonesty. The issue of “showing off” and issue of cleanliness (or lack of it). Issue of violence or “duplicate” non-violence. Issue of being “confused”. Issue of untouchability, casteism, comunalism, (lack of)secularism or many others. Have you in your life so far seen any of these being resolved? I guess not.

On Kargil soldiers, are you serious? There is no doubt they were brave who laid down their lives for the country. But did you read the newspaper reports which wrote in detail on the apathy of the Indian Govt. who never extended any kind of support to the dead soldiers’ families? They are supposed to stay alive for a mere Rs. 800 pension per month. Can you imagine yourself supporting your family for a Rs. 800 per month? huh ..The soldiers have started thinking about themselves as being stupid. Why should they lay their lives? Is there any reason what-so-ever?

Being a cricketer is so good. Imagine yourself being an Olympic gold medalist or a national level silver medalist. Just a few days back a national level silver medalist was caught in a prostitution racket because she was forced to prostitution for lack of money and she needed to support her family. This was not the first case though. There had been many and will continue to be a huge number of such cases appearing in the newspapers. You’re saying “We’ll have champions in all walks of life and sports”? Do you really believe that after reading such news almost every other day? Some of the other sportsmen have committed suicide. Do you really think India can come out of cricket mania? India needs to come out of cricket mania and support all other sport activities as well. Do you recall any other sport being played when you were in school? Do you recall any other sport being played when you were in college? Do you recall anyone else’ name who made it to national basketball or football or long jump or any other sporting area apart from cricket? Can you guys fund other sports as well now that you know that Indian govt will never ever support other sports? Do you guys have this much of courage and faith in your own India? “you would like to see” ..will ever materialize? you say “we could be there in next two years” …my question is how ?? how ?? and how ?

You are talking about power of youth ? What power? Did you check the newspaper today? Youth burned down a train simply because they were ticket-less and security personnel questioned them. Is that the power of youth - destructive- is that what you meant? Our youth is responsible? Are you kidding me? “More talented and more determined to the cause”…C’mon Bhajji, you need to open your eyes man … where is the innovation? Is this the talent? Did you hear about any new discovery or invention being made in last decade which came from India? Everyone just wants to become either an engineer or a doctor or a MBA graduate or a cricketer. There is a rat race for these four only. Kids simply cram and cram. Without ever thinking about what it means to learn Newton’s laws and apply the laws to bring in new inventions? The innovation and independent thinking is dead in our kids. They cannot think about anything else apart from IIT, IIM, AIIMS and cricket etc. Did you see any solution coming in technology arena from IITs ..say for example in getting the irrigation system in place for India to prevent suicides in Andhra? or Did you ever hear about an IIM grad overhauling a dead HMT/IDPL/HEC or any other dead public sector company or to save any dying company?

Did you see the Indian flags all over the roads and railway stations all across the country on 16th morning? Did you see how we were having those flags under our shoes and chappals? Did you notice how we Indians love the cleanliness all around us? Have you ever noticed how we threw the paper bags and banana peels on the bus stops after we finish our hurried breakfast early morning? Have you noticed how we cannot control our bladder and pee everywhere on the walls where in bold letters it’s written “Yahan Pesaab kerna mana hai” ? I wonder if you still have your eyes closed? Or you simply do not want to open your eyes at all. Be realistic Bhajji…I know India can be great ..but it cannot be great if we continue to do what we are doing. It can never be great and a good nation to be proud of if we do the same old thing that we did yesterday. The farmers will continue to commit suicide. The Olympians and National level players will continue to sell their medals and get into prostitution. The half educated youth will continue to burn down the trains and buses. The roads and public places will continue to be dirty and we’ll continue to spit all around us. And we’ll continue to say “Mera bharat mahan. Jai Hind”. It’s time we wake up to reality and people of your fame whom Indian youth considers “God” take up these issues and bring them into focus. Call for a press conference and tell them how bad you feel about all your fans who spit in public places. Tell them on TV and public ads to be clean and keep the public places clean. Tell them to have some control on their bladder and use only toilets. Have a 5 % of your income from cricket matches given to other sport funds so Govt. of India can also have some shame and they start doing something for other sports as well. Don’t know if this will ever get published, but if you ever read this, commit yourself to be more realistic. I know it hurts and pains. But truth was never sweet anyway!

plz reply me …………your comment for me

    bye bye & tack care…………

Please correct the name Saheed Azad bhagat singh from Azam Bhagat singh.I honour the feelings of Praveen jha and request you all to do something for the nation.I am not a stardome and no one ever find me that important giving a speech infront of the nation.
You have a got a precious opportunity where people know you well.Change will be far more firm if initiated at your end.
Lets join hand together and not only dream about a beautiful nation but make it a fact.
