We are here in Colombo, and ever since landing the only question being thrown is what happened at the Bangalore airport.

Our friends from the media are at most times in a rush and hush for stories, deadlines and footages, especially our cameraman friends. Its often seen, the edges of their camera hitting various people at varied times, be it airport, press meets almost all the places. Am sure, a number of people would testify this.
For all good sake knowledge, am attaching a video with this blog, an actual video of the exact recording of what happened at the airport. For clear understanding, I have also provided a deconstruct of the video.
A deconstruct of the video
I get down from the car, and wait to get my luggage, behind me is an armed CISF guard and officials to keep a security cover from media men and public.
Am facing the car, you can see I have no clue what is behind me. The camera man is seen running towards me and the intensity and pace with which his camera clearly hits my head and it was not like just a touch, it hit me hard on my head and patka, I am very particular of being touched and hit at my head or my patka and sure a million other would be too. As a prompt reflex, not even knowing what hit my head, I pushed the object, realizing it, after I pushed it, that it was a camera. There was a clear security cover around me. The camera man breached that cover. The CISF guard and official is seen asking the camera guy to step back as they saw him being at fault of hitting my head with his camera and crossing the security cover.
At NO STAGE DID I HIT OR SLAP THE CAMERAMAN. NEITHER WILL I EVER DO. Most media men would second this, my relationship, behaviour and cooperation with each of them has always been one of friendly nature and with cordial respect. I respect the media and the unflinching determination with which they have always brought news to the country, and connected to our fans.
Right now, for me its much more important to contribute and take India to the number 1 ODI ranking than anything else.
I look forward to your support during the times ahead, pray for me and for our team to reach the number one spot.

The fragrance of the new season

After a very long time I am having this ‘new season blues’. It happens with every cricketer who is coming out of an off season. Anticipation of new season, expectations of doing well, and dream to take things forward in terms of your own and team performance, adds up to the excitement.  No matter how good was your last season, no matter how much one has performed at that time, when you are about to start a new season you have to start from the scratch. As in cricket, so in life, you are as good as your last ball. After a long time we got this kind of break so it’s extremely pleasing to have these familiar butterflies in the stomach.

Right now we are in the middle of this new tournament ‘Corporate Cup’. It’s a new tournament initiated by the BCCI where top corporate teams are fighting for the laurels. It’s an ideal way to prepare for the upcoming challenges as this will give us a good match practise before the Sri Lanka tour and the Champions trophy. You can spend loads of time in the nets and work on your skill, but nothing works like using those skills in the middle as you become more acquainted to the subtle changes you need to make, certain improvement you need to do before the real battle.

It’s also a great opportunity for all of us to represent our corporate that have supported us right from the beginning. In my case, Air India hired me when I was about to start my cricket and needed that support and cushioning. The first visiting card provided to me by them is still imprinted in my memory. I was appointed as an assistant manager in 1998 and that was first time I felt I have achieved something from cricket. And that’s the story of most of us who got these jobs when they didn’t have anything. So in a way it’s great for us to represent Air India and we would try our level best to win this title for our employers. I am thankful to BCCI for presenting us this platform.

Personally speaking, this tournament means yet another opportunity to prove my leadership skills. I am leading my side ‘Air India Blue’ in the tournament and players like MS Dhoni, RP Singh and Mohammed Kaif are playing under me. Last time when I was leading Mumbai Indians in 2008, I had to leave it in between because of reasons known to everyone. But bygones are bygones and I am looking forward to lift this trophy and to put the record straight.

I am sure we will carry our great one day form to the next season and we will do well in Sri Lanka. Last time we did extremely well over there and we are much aware of their conditions and pitches. So let’s hope that we will start the season on the right note and carry a good momentum to South Africa.

Cheers

Bhajj

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY

Yesterday was a very special day for me and all of us. 15th August holds a very special place in my heart and I completely understand and treasure the meaning of independence.

I love everything about India. By nature I am a very emotional and passionate person. My bonding with my mother land is very special and deep. India is a unique country in more than many ways. And one thing which really strikes me is that despite coming from different backgrounds, we are one. No country in the world can match this uniqueness about India. Our dressing room is the best example of that. Here one can find a superb amalgamation of all sects and religions. Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan’s identity here is through the kind of game they play and not by the kind of religious beliefs they follow. As long as we understand and follow this simple mantra of unity in diversity no one in the world is a match for us. No doubt we have our issues, but, find me a house where there are no issues. But they are our issues and we can handle them. Recently, I was watching the Kargil Divas celebration on the screen, and I got really emotional. Thanks to our brave soldiers and what they did for us ten years back. They came from all parts of India and sacrificed their life to ensure that we can sleep peacefully at home. It’s basically the various colours of India that touches my heart the most. And when these colours gel together, we come across the most beautiful collage made by GOD.

In school days, this day meant we will get sweets in school and then we can go and play cricket the whole day. But once I started playing for India, I understood the importance of freedom and the price we have paid for it. Shaheede-Azam Bhagat Singh is my all time hero and his sacrifice for the mother Land has always inspired me. One thing I would like to share here is that, whenever the national anthem is played before the game, it really gives me lot of motivation and the zest and the zeal for the country increases manifolds. Most of the time on independence Day we are with the Indian team, playing in some other country and that makes the sense of the occasion all the more obvious. So no matter where we are, be it Trinidad or Melbourne, we always have a special celebration. In a very silent way, we pay tribute to all the brave men who laid down their life to so that we can stand under the Tiranga and feel proud to be an Indian.

Going by the way the things are moving in India, I can bet on one thing that, by 2020 India will be a force to reckon with. Entire world is looking unto us. When the entire world is reeling under the slowdown, our companies and banks are showing good profits. That’s because we can integrate the best of new and old and the foundation of our principles is rock solid. Going by my instinct, by 2020 India will be one of the super powers in the world, and by then there will be no poverty in India, no one will sleep hungry and everyone will have a job and security. In my field, I would like to see Indian cricket team at the top of all the forms of the game, and we are very close to it, and if keep performing well, we could be there in next two years. I would also like to see Indian sports doing extremely well in Olympics and we will have champions in all walks of life.

All this can’t be achieved without the power of the youth. Indian youth is very different from the youth of west. Our youth is more responsible, more talented and more determined to the cause. Entire world knows about it and that’s why they want us. Even president Obama is advocating the path of our youth to be followed. The youth needs empowerment; you give them that and then see things happening very quickly. Such a force with proper guidance and nurturing is someone to be reckoned. The Indian cricket team is the prime example of that. The youth is the future of the country and if we really want a prosperous and a happy nation, we need to trust our youth and let them do the things their way. We need to stay in- sync with our roots and we would never waver from the goal. Here’s wishing you a very happy independence day.

Jai Hind.

WADA BLUES

Breaks don’t come easy to us and right now we are savouring one such rare break from cricket by spending most of the time with our families & friends, giving rest to our jaded bodies, trying to recover from small niggles, following fitness programme prescribed by our team management and doing simple things in life which we often miss as cricketers. In between we have some odd sponsor commitments and franchise events along with the few famous meetings for the WADA issue. Apparently, we are still the top newsmakers and are featuring in the newspapers and TV channels for all the reasons, portrayed as villains for not signing along the dotted lines suggested by WADA.
It seems like everyone and anyone has a view on it and the majority blaming us for creating much ado about nothing. It has become such a huge crime, that the intellects from all walks of life have obliged us by making us realise how irresponsible we are as a sportsperson and as a citizen of this civilised world. The general outlook is that we are spoiled brats who want doping to continue in the chaste world of sports or hardly care about this serious issue.
In the last eight years I have been tested at-least 15 times (the recent one being the one in the World-T20 in England along with Dhoni) and every time I bowed gleefully to the demands of the circumstances. I would like to clarify one thing here that we are responsible sportsmen and completely understand that proper measures should be taken to uproot this menace from the arena of sports. We support the cause and are up for it. Personally, I am against any kind of drugs and that is what I would recommend to all the upcoming youngsters.
Let me utilize this opportunity to tell the world that we have no problems with entire contract but we do have serious issue with one of the ‘whereabouts’ clause in the contract. This clause in particular breaches our privacy and freedom which is very rare and special for us. To elucidate it further, I would like to mention our schedule from 20th of August 2009 onwards. Round about this time we will have our preparation camp for the upcoming season. After that we have to participate in the ‘BCCI Corporate Cup’ and straight from there we have to go to Sri lanka for the Tri- series. We come back from Sri-Lanka by the third week of September and straight away leave for South Africa to play in the Champions Trophy and when we come back most of us will be playing in the Champions league at home, where some of us will get a small break. Final of the Champions league is on the 23rd of Sept and on 25th of Sept we start a seven match series against Australia. Straight after that series, we play against Sri-Lanka followed by another series against Bangladesh in December-January. We come back and find ourselves eagerly awaited by South Africa at home for a full series followed by Asia cup in the next year. And then there is IPL and world T-20 in West Indies. So that takes us to May 2010 , and then a tour to Zimbabwe followed by Sri Lanka. This is my cricketing where about for the next one year and during this time I am available for testing anytime and anywhere. Just read it carefully and you would find breaks are rare and we have to attend too many family and personal issues during these breaks. Most of the times we get four to 7 days break in between series and at that time we have to play so many roles and fulfil so many responsibilities. Role of a son, husband, father, friend and I dare to mention some little time and peace with yourself. During this time someone has to give attention to his mother’s prolong illness or someone has to get his house repaired or re-done. Someone has to take his kids out for holidays or someone has to find suitable boy for his sister. If you ask me, my plan in these breaks is to have no plan. I can be at home or suddenly pick my friends and go for a long drive. One fine morning my mother would wake up and would like me to accompany her to the Golden temple and what would be my reply… Apologising for my non accompaniment as someone from WADA is expected today. Or God forbids, I have an emergency situation. What would you expect me to do, address that issue or worry about WADA people who may come or not. I have to be at home or at a given location for this hour or at that moment I need find an internet connection or send an sms, which may deliver or not. And in the process of all my personal commitments, if I am not available in their prescribed radar, I have a ‘missed test’ label against my name. Three incidents like this and a ban of one to two year waits gracefully for me. And going by how efficient Indian media is, it will find way in some newspaper or another, questioning my integrity and commitment. In a nutshell, this clause is like an iron chain around my valuable time which belongs to me, my family and my close ones. We never go out and preach other sports their code of conduct and that is what I expect from my respected colleagues from other sports too. At no point I feel that we are doing more for our country then them or we are at a higher platform from them. I feel we all try our level best to bring laurels to the country in our chosen field. But at the same time, I would humbly request the people to understand that in India, we, as cricketers, are more in public eyes than others. Trust me, we don’t ask for it and yes, it’s a double edged dagger. We are privileged to have this kind of following but at the same time this also brings too much intrusion in our lives. I would ask other sportsman that how many times they have been questioned on petty personal stuffs like owing a new house or attending a public function in a particular manner. How often have they been tagged by the media like we have been? Is there any other sportsman in this country who, not only has to answer his on the field performances but also has to explain his off the field conducts. Trust me, at times it’s a very choking experience and that’s why these breaks are rare and private where we don’t want anyone to disturb us or chase us. We would like to live our life like normal human beings and attend to our other commitments apart from cricket. All these issues are as vital as our cricket.

Here I would also like to mention that I am extremely thankful to BCCI who has gone all the way to understand our concern and support us. And yes people are giving example of greats like Fedrar and Nadal, Ussain Bolt and Lance Armstrong. They all have criticized this clause and given a choice I am sure they wouldn’t have signed it. One good thing is that, in the last few days, other cricketing bodies in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand have also supported our case and are very much in sync with what we feel about this clause. So there is awareness and unity in our thoughts. It’s a different issue that they have signed it and I don’t know under what compulsion they have done it. But as any other human being, privacy is my right and I would guard it at any given cost, giving due respect to my cricketing commitments.

PS: To put it more relatively, I would like others to imagine themselves being under a 24 hour vigilance for the coming 3 months on the pretext of some theft occurred. And to add on to it, one is under scrutiny all the time and answerable to every search conducted. How many of you will agree or won’t protest against it? I am sure there are better ways to catch the real cheats.

Cheers
Bhajji

I thank you all for your feedback on the book of the great coach. I have gone through each of them, and apologise for not having been able to respond to each on your post. I had expressed my views, and appreciate the same expressed by most of you. However, would request you to not abuse anyone. One has all rights to criticize someone’s thought but its unfair to use abusive language.

As children read this blog, request you to refrain from using unparliamentarily language.

Its has been a killer of last couple of days. London to Mumbai to Delhi to Chennai to Madurai to Rameshwaram retun to Madurai, Chennai and Delhi. And further to home in Jhallandhur.

Destiny is the word which comes to my mind, the reason behind all the travel seen.

Courtesy a last minute confirmation for a work related shoot which had me calling all the way from London to Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. The shoot also featured fellow Indian Cricketer Shreesanth.

It seems, I was destined and called by the power’s of Rameshwaram, one of the four dhams of India.. The other dhams being- Puri is Orrisa, Badrinath in North and Dwarka in Gujrat.

The almighty Rameshwaram is a legend in itself. I am told Rameshwaram is the place from where Lord Rama, built a bridge across the sea to rescue his consort Sita, from her abductor, Ravana. This is also the place where Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to cleanse away the sin of killing Ravana. There are two linga’s in the main temple. 1) Made by Goddess Sita with her own hands and 2) Brought by Lord Hanuman

Belief in all religion and paying homage is something we as cricketer’s are always learning. Cricket exposes us to so many religion and so many culture’s. I firmly believe our Indian Cricket Team is a true representation of the secular identity of our country. A symbol of pluralism in modern day India.

It astounded me that I was standing just 25 km away from Sri Lanka by boat, and at the extreme end of South of India.

Unfortunately, I am unable to disclose more on the shoot due professional reasons.

Destiny had me and Sreesanth visiting and paying homage to Lord Rameshwara. I feel after what had happened at the IPL last year, this has been redemption in front of God for both of us. We all commit mistakes, we are his children and we are all in universal brotherhood.

Shenta (Nickname for Shreesanth), was narrating his story of his unique connection with Lord Shiva since his childhood days, when fighting an ailment his parents vowed to Lord Shiva for his life and then on his recovery owed his life to the Lord.

The bond is indeed unique which Shenta and I share. And let me clear it once again, he has always been close to me. There are some happy memories spend together in the dressing room and it was good to have him around and together visiting the holy temple. I await his return to the Indian team sometime soon. Like I told him, he has to play well in the domestic games and he can be playing for India again.

Looking forward to be home soon, eat home made food. Its actually been sooooo long.

I shall write to you soon on two major surprise for me

1) My Dream Car

2) My Dream Home

Keep visisiting for more..

This long break between tournaments will help me connect with each of you and write more often.

Cheers friends..

Just woke up a while back, trying to adjust to the jet lag from West Indies. I have taken a short vacation in the UK visiting family here. Its been quite a hectic last few months for all of us, was a good consolation to win the ODI series against West Indies.

I was reading sms’s from my manager- Sangeet, who asked me to have a look at what the  greatest coach of an IPL team of all times had mentioned in his just released book.

I read through the comments on a online news portal. The great coach indeed had some great comments to make,  just like his great coaching methods.

I am not surprised at this. Infact anything coming out of Australia does not surprise me anymore.

It just shows how much they love me and keep thinking about me in their minds and hearts.

Anyways, whatever is happening in Australia just shows how much love and respect they have for us.

This is not the first time an Australian has showered his praise on me and am pretty certain he wont be the last one either.

What surprises (offends) me are the well crafted and framed comments on proven legends like Mr Gavaskar and Sachin by someone whose coaching credentials were doubted by the acclaimed and most respected Aussie Legend Leg spinner. The coaching credentials were tested waters again at an IPL team this year.

There used to be a time when action used to speak louder than words but now its vice-versa. Words draw more attention that action.

At times I wonder why all these things appear just before the launch of the book.

Good luck to them.

The race for the trophy is coming to an end for our team, accompanied by our return to the Indian soil. The sad part is that the challenge ended a little too early for us and our hands are empty this time. Just like any other big event in a cricketer’s life, last 40 days or so were full of excitement, challenges, few victories and huge disappointment of not making it into the last four. We are still to play our last game and will try and win that one to restore some pride.

In my opinion, our position in the pool doesn’t reflect our true potential. We were considered to be one of the contenders for the trophy but we didn’t live up to the expectations and will soon be taking an unceremonious exit from the tournament.

We started on the right note and our every step was towards the right direction but then a one week break derailed our entire momentum. After that break, somehow we couldn’t grasp our slide and kept losing tight encounters. I have mentioned earlier as well that in a format like T-20, momentum is the key and once you lose that it’s hard to get back to the winning ways. Make no mistakes, we tried our best, trained ourselves in the best possible manner, planned ourselves for every little contingency but somehow couldn’t execute it.

Looking back at the tournament, I feel our batting lacked depth, especially in the middle overs. And most of the matches were lost in those overs only. Bowling wise, apart from one or two games, we did fairly well. Holistically, it was a learning curve for all of us and I am sure next year we will come better, hungrier for runs and full of zeal to set the record straight.

I would like to thank Mrs and Mr. Ambani for their constant support and encouragement. I don’t know much about the other franchises, but ours is really very supportive and is always there to help us in our thick and thins. I have never seen them interfering with our cricket related matters and have given us the freedom to take our own decisions. Yes, just like us they are disappointed with the result, but at the same time they believe that we have given our best and at times even your best is not enough.

Coming on to this year’s IPL, just because it was played in a foreign land, the entire experience and the feel of the tournament took a 360 degree turn. The tournament was very well planned and organized and the entire operation was seamless for all the people involved in it. It’s all the more commendable, as organizers got very little time to put up the entire show. Still, all through the tournament, Indian fans and their craze for the game was badly missed. Hopefully the tournament will be played in India next year and Mumbai Indians will do better to give their fans more reasons to celebrate.

Most of the teams reaching in the semi finals deserve their spot and from here on it’s very hard to figure out a favourite. In the knock out stages, it’s just a matter of two good days and the trophy could be in your hands. So best of luck to all the semi-finalist and I am sure the last weekend of the tournament will keep everyone on the edge.

I will be back in India soon and will take a few days off in Jallandhar before getting ready for the T20 world cup. All the boys are in great shape and are itching to defend their title. The time to wear the ‘Indian colours’ is round the corner and we know this time, as the defending champions, a lot will be expected from us.

Words fall short in describing our disappointment over Thursday’s defeat. Yet again in this tournament we had to go through the terrible feeling of ‘so near yet so far.’ I was the mute witness at the other end, feeling utterly helpless, when Lasith Malinga got out. Back in the dugout, every-one was dumb-struck as it was hard to believe that we came so close to the total and still lost it. Once back from the game, my mind busied itself in the search of an answer for our defeats, and to my utter dismay I found myself dwindling with ifs and buts. I couldn’t find a definite answer and perhaps there was none, for cricket is a game of uncertainties.

What if I had not taken a single of the last ball of the nineteenth over? But then there was a counter logic to that. In these situations every run is important. What if Abhishek Nayar had not tried the same shot again? Make no mistake he batted with lot of grit and determination and almost did his job. What if I could’ve got some more strikes? 6 runs in 9 balls were very much gettable, but I only got to play one ball out of those nine balls. I asked myself so many times how I could have or as a team we could have approached this chase differently. I think in the first few overs we didn’t get that many runs and lost three wickets and that created a lot of pressure on the middle order. After scrutinising myself from every angle, all I could make out was, that we tried our best and eventually fortune wasn’t on our side. I would like to give full marks to Shane Warne and his team in the same breath. As the result suggests, they handled the tense moments of the match better than us and that’s why they are worthy winners.

One thing is for sure, that such games can leave you completely drained out and exhausted, especially, when you are not on the right side of the result. The more you think about it, the more you have that sinking feeling. But bygones are bygones. It’s a fresh day and we have some fresh challenges waiting for us. We obviously have some positives to take from the defeat of Thursday. One thing was that we really fought hard as a team and tried our best. And that is what we all aspire to do as professional cricketers. At times result will come our way and at times it won’t. Second is that Sachin Tendulkar is back with runs under his kitty and that is a very good news from the team’s point of views.

Batting under lights at Durban wasn’t easy as new ball was swinging and spinners were getting some grip and turn from the surface. We experimented with the new batting line up and one result doesn’t suggest that it hasn’t worked for us. We will sit before the game against Chennai Super Kings to discuss all the pros and cons and I am sure we will find a best possible way out to win our last two games. One can make all the strategies and make plans but it all boils down to how you play in those forty overs, how you execute your plans and handle the pressure situations. So, our aim is to win both the games and see where we end up in the points table. If we can win our last two games and some other matches go our way, we have a fair chance to make it to the final four.
